Exploring the Best of 2022–2023 Ukrainian wines with Global Wine Rating
In the vast expanse of Ukrainian vineyards, there’s a unique story unfolding — one that intertwines the country’s rich winemaking history with the current challenges.
Despite the prevailing circumstances, Ukrainian winemakers persistently care for their vines, crafting wines that encapsulate the resilience and aspirations of a people yearning for peace.
In this article we will embrace the complexities of Ukraine’s winemaking landscape, where tradition and turmoil coexist. Against the backdrop of a nation grappling with strife, the vineyards stand as a symbol of endurance, reflecting the hopes of Ukrainians for a more tranquil future.
Recently we completed a short research about the best wines in the world in certain categories and another one for our visit to Lisbon. In the correlation below, you can clearly observe a cloud of data points representing the strong correlation between GWMR and 100 Points Vivino rating. The “normality difference” highlighted as a darker area, signifies the range where the two ratings are in close proximity. Additionally, the red trend line illustrates the overall positive correlation between GWMR and Vivino ratings for wines within this region.
In the case of Ukrainian wine, most of the featured wines comply with this criteria. But unlike the usual picture in Europe, a big percentage of vintages have the GWR (the professional evaluation score) higher than the Vivino (the consumer rating). This indicates that local wines are significantly undervalued by wine enthusiasts and lack widespread recognition on the global stage.
1: Red Wines
Ukrainian red wines, although having good scores on GWR are often overlooked in the world of viticulture. The country’s winemakers, harnessing the unique terroir and indigenous grape varieties, craft red wines that showcase a rich tapestry of tastes. From robust Cabernet Sauvignons to elegant Merlots and even a local type of Alibernet, called Odessa Black, Ukrainian red wines offer a delightful journey for the palate. The versatile climate and diverse soils contribute to the complexity of these wines, presenting a promising landscape for oenophiles seeking new and intriguing vinous experiences.
2: White Wines
Ukrainian white wines, quietly making their mark on the global wine stage, reflect the country’s dedication to winemaking excellence. These wines, often overshadowed by their more renowned counterparts, boast a unique identity shaped by the Ukrainian terroir. From the crisp and vibrant Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays to the aromatic and textured Muscats and Traminers, Ukraine’s white wines are a testament to the diversity of the region. The winemakers, leveraging the country’s fertile lands and adopting modern viticultural techniques, produce whites that carry the essence of Ukrainian soil and climate.
As the GWM rating helps the world explore these lesser-known treasures, Ukrainian white wines emerge as a delightful surprise, ready to captivate enthusiasts seeking something new and distinctive.
3: Rosés
GWR features a wide variety of Ukrainian roses, from the delicate hues of salmon to the more vibrant shades of pink — these wines offer a visual feast that is only a prelude to the sensory experience that follows. The winemakers, blending traditional methods with modern approaches, carefully select grape varieties to craft roses that strike a balance between acidity, fruitiness, and floral notes.
